The End Of The "I Don't Have A List" Excuse! Here's The Step-By-Step Plan!

I started my online business back in 1996 while still a
crew member on active duty with the United States Air
Force.
I was a C-130 navigator who often put in 18-hour
"crew duty days" and THEN sat down at my computer and
worked on my fledgling Internet Marketing business. It
was NOT unusual for me to fall asleep while typing on
my computer and to wake up with a screen full of zzzzzz's
… caused by my heavy hands resting on the keyboard :-)
Back then, I was at the 14-year point in my military
career, and I wasn't sure that I wanted to stay for another 6
years when I would be eligible to retire with a pension. That
was also during a period when the military was doing a
"Reduction In Forces" due to budget cuts. So, all branches
of the military were mandated to look at where they could
"trim the fat" and that meant forcing a LOT of soldiers to
leave. Some were offered an early retirement option.
I was in what was considered a critical career field, so
I was NOT eligible for the early retirement even if I had
wanted it.
So, one FRUSTRATING day, I simply DECIDED that I
was not going to wait until retirement to start building my
own business... something that I had dreamed of since before
I started college in the fall of 1977!
I looked around on the internet and stumbled across
people who had already started online businesses. There
were very few really teaching HOW to build a successful
online business BECAUSE very few had actually done it!
I managed to stumble across a few "successes,"
subscribed to their newsletters, and PRINTED OUT many
issues of their newsletter to read while out flying out
over the Pacific Ocean.
The ONE THING that they all taught was that you needed
to build a list. They taught that you needed to:
- Identify a group of people with a very specific common
problem, concern or passion
- Find a proven solution for their problem, concern or
passion
- Let them know that you had that solution and get them
on a mailing list
- Follow up with them discussing their interests and your
solution until they grew to "know, like and trust you"
and then, provided they convinced themselves that your
solution was ideal for them, they would eventually BUY
it from you :-)
That formula hasn't really changed 26 years later. The
only real difference is that now there are SO MANY people
offering these "solutions" that you need to offer "an ethical
bribe" to get people to join YOUR list. That bribe can
be an ebook, audio, video, white paper, checklist, access
to a membership site, some webinar training, etc.
As I taught the EXACT same formula that my mentors
taught me right from the very start (and I'll single out
Jim Daniels as one of my first teachers), I noticed one big
persistent PROBLEM.
People would listen to your solution, and agree that it made
perfect sense, BUT then always FIND an EXCUSE!
In my military background, excuses were simply unacceptable.
People could die because of you making excuses!
You found a way to do what at first often seemed impossible.
So, I didn't make excuses for not simply USING the proven
formula that others showed me.
However, I accepted that some people perceived that they had
real stumbling blocks. The one most often stated was “not
having any extra money to invest.” YES, they had money for
beer, cigarettes, cable TV with 100 channels, and almost
anything else that they wanted... just no money to start
a business :-)
